Art, Theatre &
Creative Culture
In the mid-1980s, local artists discovered a gold mine of vacant buildings in the South Main district. These architectural gems, large enough for live/work space, were affordable and had unsurpassed character.
And so began the migration of artists to South Main. Robert McGowan, Bert Sharpe and Patti Lechman, David White, Terry Jones and others paved the way for other artists to create, showcase
and shape the neighborhood.
Today, South Main is an established arts district. Artists, musicians, writers, designers, architects and
organizations supporting Memphis culture have become a vital part of South Main's creative fabric.
